Relapsing Fever

Bacteria known as spirochetes, Borrelia recurrentis, closely related to the organisms that cause Lyme disease cause Relapsing Fever. The bacteria may be transmitted to humans by either ticks or lice. The disease occurs in Ethiopia, Sudan and in South America.

Manifestations: The illness is characterised by periods of:
• Fever
• Chills
• Headaches
• Body aches
• Muscle aches
• Cough
What can happen though is that the above characteristics of the disease alternating with periods when the fever subsides and the person feels relatively well again.

Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnosis is by way of taking a blood test. Treatment is available.
Prevent relapsing fever by:
• use of repellents
• protective clothing when exposed
• prompt detection and removal of arthropods on clothing and skin
• Attention to hygiene.
• use of bed net
