Ancylostomiasis (Hookworm disease)
Hookworm disease is caused by Ancylostoma duodenale. The disease is widely endemic in tropical and subtropical countries where improper disposal of human faeces is practised; common in North Africa, Northern India, and Northern parts of the Far East and the Andean region of South America. More than several hundred thousand fatalities are reported each year in the developing countries.
Transmission: The transmission is orally or percutaneously (transmitted by faecal contamination of the soil - infective larvae penetrate the skin, usually the foot). The larvae migrate to the lungs and the duodenum.
Manifestation: The larvae give reason for itching and haemoptysis. The adult worm gives stomach pain and ulcer-like symptoms. Anaemia may develop.
Diagnosis and treatment: Eggs can be shown in stools. Treatment is available.
Prevent having ancylostomiasis:
- Use shoes
- Use toilets
