Mycoplasma pneumonia

Mycoplasma pneumonia (atypical pneumonia) is a tracheobronchitis. The atypical pneumonia is caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which is a small micro-organism lying between categories of bacteria and viruses. Person-to-person transmission by contact with respiratory secretions. Persons of all ages are at risk but rarely children under 5 years old. Outbreaks are common among young adults, especially in crowded military and institutional settings.

Manifestations: Incubation period is 1 to 4 weeks. Symptoms include:

Persistent cough is common during convalescence. Fatal cases are reported occasionally, primarily among the elderly.

Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnosis is based on taking blood tests. Treatment is available.

Vaccine: There is not currently one available.
