Chlamydia pneumoniae

The bacteria Chlamydia pneumoniae is the cause of this disease. The disease is transmitted from person to person by respiratory secretions. Re-infection throughout life appears to be common. C. pneumoniae infection may be associated with atherosclerotic vascular disease. Associations with Alzheimer’s disease, asthma, and reactive arthritis have been suggested.

Manifestations: Pneumonia or bronchitis, gradual onset of cough with little or no fever.

Diagnosis and treatment: Diagnosis is based on taking a blood test . Treatment with antibiotics is available.

Vaccine: Not available.

Prevention: There are no known methods to prevent infection.
