Backpacker Travel Insurance with Medical Conditions

Travelling with a medical condition is a far more common scenario than you might think and at Bestbackpackersinsurance.co.uk we can offer additional cover for hundreds of pre existing medical conditions.

It is important when purchasing your travel insurance that you declare any medical condition that you may have or that you may have had in the past, especially when it is connected to the heart as there is no time scale regarding declaring such conditions. Travel insurance for people with existing medical conditions is designed to provide cover for the normal risks associated with travelleing abroad but also to cover your specific conditions so that if you were to fall ill abroad you will be covered for any emergency treatment that may be required.

The probability of you falling ill with a pre existing condition is greater and for this reason there will generally be an additional premium to pay to cover those declared medical conditions.

What is a pre existing medical condition?

Each travel insurance underwriter has different definitions relating to an existing medical condition. Our underwriter AGA International SA states that you must declare any existing conditions to us if you answer yes to any of the following;

  1. Have you been prescribed any medication, received any treatment or had a consultation with a doctor or hospital specialist in the past 12 months for any medical condition;
  2. Have you ever been diagnosed with or treated for any of the following, before you bought your policy:
    1. any cardiovascular problems for example, heart attack, angina, chest pain or palpitations;
    2. any other heart condition;
    3. hypertension (raised blood pressure)
    4. blood clots;
    5. raised cholesterol; or
    6. any cerebrovascular problems for example stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or brain haemorrhage.
  3. Are you awaiting treatment for any medical condition or the results of any medical tests or investigations.

How do I declare a medical condition?

Declaring a medical condition is easy. When you get to stage 4 of our online booking process you can decalre your conditions. You will be asked some questions and then if an additional premium is shown you can at this point decide to include cover for your medical condition(s), or exclude them with no additional premium required.

If you are unsure then you can always call our friendly call centre staff who can guid you through the process over the telephone.

Please remember failure to declare a medical condition to us could result in any claim being rejected and force you to cover any medical costs yourself.
